The acronym CMR shall be well-known to anybody doing business abroad. Therefore, we often deal with compiling CMR for the international shipments of our bronze and aluminium bronze ingots.

What does it have to do with, what kind of information must it contain, and how must it be filled in? The answer to these queries is fundamental if we consider that CMR plays a significant role in shipping goods by road. Why? Let’s see it briefly.

What is the CMR, and why is it necessary?

Let’s begin with its definition: CMR is the French acronym of "Convention relative au contrat de transport international de marchandises par route" (lit. Convention on the contract for the international carriage of goods by road).

Signed on 19th May 1956 in Geneva, the CMR is a Convention born mainly to define common and shared terms and conditions for shipping goods by road. Thus, it aims also at regulating and facilitating it.

Therefore, this international consignment note is an out-and-out agreement of shipment, which is valid both as proof of receipt and as proof of delivery when the following conditions occur:

  • The shipment of goods is by road;
  • The shipment place is in a different Country from the delivery place;
  • At least one of these States is a Convention member.

The applicability of the CMR is related to the Countries where goods are loaded and delivered. The seat of the parties isn’t relevant.

How to fill in CMR: who are the parties involved, and what are the required data?

While filling in CMR, it is necessary to know which parties are involved in it, who has the responsibility to compile it, and, last but not least, what is the correct distribution of original copies of this consignment note:

Furthermore, it is fundamental to keep in mind that the correct compiling of the fields is strict so that CMR can be considered valid proof of receipt and delivery. So how to fill them in?

Inoltre, i campi della CMR devono essere compilati correttamente affinché essa possa essere considerata una valida prova di ricezione e consegna della merce. Come?

While dealing with the international shipment of goods by road, the CMR is an essential document. Thus, we collaborate with our customers to correctly compile these papers and to properly manage the shipment of our ingots. Furthermore, in Italy the CMR is also considered proof of export by the Customs Agency.
