After four days of intense participation, the 30th edition of SMM Hamburg ended successfully on 9th September 2022. With 11 pavilions, 2,000 exhibitors working in all areas of the maritime industry, and more than 30,000 visitors coming from over 100 Countries, SMM gathered a large turn-out which confirmed its status as the leading worldwide trade fair in the industry once again.
The number of participants is particularly significant, most of all after the pandemic. The evidence that SMM was also a chance for all the maritime industry players to meet in person.

Last but not least, the role played by SMM in the big transition challenge of the maritime industry. Conferences, stages, technological solutions, and start-ups. The rich program focused not only on digital transformation but also on the necessary change of the industry toward green solutions. Thus, SMM showed the tangible will to be faithful to its motto: Driving the maritime transition while trying to drive the industry towards a sustainable future thanks to innovation and information.

So, what is the role of those companies like RMG which participated in this event?

RMG production of copper based alloy ingots and maritime industry

Refineries like RMG, a manufacturer of copper based alloy ingots, are upstream of the supply chains of many sectors, among which there is the maritime industry. Our copper based alloy ingots, especially aluminium bronze and brass, are suitable for manufacturing various naval components such as ship propellers, pumps, valves, cleaners, and gears.

What is the benefit of using our alloys to produce ship parts?

Besides the meticulous selection of quality raw materials to produce our ingots and the long-time expertise in our industry, who is interested in our products should take the environmentally friendly nature of our activity into account as well.

In RMG, the manufacturing of bronze, aluminium bronze, and special brass is based on the recovery of metals. We strictly follow the provisions for recycling raw materials, thus giving new life to waste and End of Waste (EOW) and using only a small percentage of virgin raw material in production. This process activates a potentially infinite cycle for the recovery and reuse of the materials. This good practice allows us to contribute to protecting both the environment and future generations.

R.M.G. Raffineria Metalli Guizzi S.p.A. at SMM Hamburg 2022: our experience

After participation in the Italian pavilion organised by ICE in 2018, the edition held at the beginning of September was the second experience for RMG at SMM.

Even though we were aware of the importance of this event in Europe, the restrictions of the latest two years due to the pandemic and, as a consequence, the interruption of business meetings made us careful while having high expectations for this trade fair. The remarkable visitor attendance immediately denied our concerns, thus showing a clear general desire for complete recovery.

Although the location of the Italian pavilion, so of our booth, wasn’t particularly strategic, we are pleased with our participation in SMM since the event was an opportunity to:

  • Meet current and potential customers in person once again, but also regain old contacts;
  • Understand which of our alloys meet better the demand in the maritime industry;
  • Collect useful information concerning the trend of production, in particular within European Nations.
